Canadian cableco Shaw Communications has completed a fibre-optic transport network upgrade involving deployment of the Fujitsu 1FINITY platform and Virtuora Network Control software, enabling significant capacity expansion and software-defined network control capability, network planning and design, network management, as well as service fulfillment and assurance functions. The work with Fujitsu follows the completion of other enhancements Shaw has made to the coaxial portion of its network to free up large amounts of bandwidth and significantly increase network capacity. These improvements have combined to enable Shaw to expand its broadband offerings – most recently doubling the speeds of its fastest internet plans – and paving the way to offer even faster speeds of 1Gbps and above in the future.
Damian Poltz, VP, Technology, Strategy & Network, Shaw Communications, said: 'Fujitsu has helped make our network more agile and scalable, especially in urban areas.' Paul Fagan, SVP of Sales and Marketing, Fujitsu Network Communications, added: 'Combining our technology with Shaw's infrastructure has allowed us to enable a virtualised, programmable network with automated applications and faster service provisioning.'
